Jon Barton is a screenwriter and author.
He works freelance as a script editor for various independent filmmakers, with a focus on genre storytelling. Jon is a BAFTA member and BFI Script Reader, and has twice been nominated as a Screencraft Quarterfinalist in 2022 and 2023. He co-writes with writer-director Isaac Tomiczek as Barton/Tomiczek.
Jon’s first novel, Dive, was released in January 2023. His latest novel, Little Creatures, was longlisted for the BPA First Novel Award 2023, and reached the final round of reading for the Cheshire Novel Prize 2023. An extract will be included in the Agent’s showcase in Autumn 2023.
His plays for theatre have toured the UK and played at London venues including the Royal Court, the Almeida, Lyric Hammersmith and Old Vic Theatre. His next production, Big Bad Me, opens at Little Angel Theatre in September 2023. In 2022, his play Group Animals reached the final 40 in the Verity Bargate Award. It was longlisted for the Bruntwood Prize, and reached the top 26% for BBC Drama Room submissions, which saw nearly 4,718 applications. The play was shortlisted for the Theatre503 International Playwriting Prize in 2023. He has been shortlisted twice for the Papatango Prize for playwriting.
His feature film in development, Blockbuster Boys, received £15,000 from IOM Arts Council to produce a proof-of-concept in 2024. TV credits include Holby City.
Jon studied for an MA in Dramaturgy and Script Development at Exeter University, and is an alumnus of Curtis Brown Creative. He teaches screenwriting for young people at Iconic Steps, The Princes Trust, and Lambeth Adult Learning. He also teaches for City Lit and City Academy, and lectures at Fordham University. He is a freelance editor for The Literary Consultancy and teaches their self-editing online courses. He is a prolific mentor and freelance editor.
